Perhaps it doesn’t matter, or amounts to the same thing. Hope of a particular kind…“hope of reason.” The phrase may strike us as odd, unfamiliar, ambiguous: is it “reason” doing the hoping “reason” that is shackled, in need of liberation so that it may come to hope when before it was unable ? Or is it rather us, not wholly rational creatures after all, who are shackled precisely because we find ourselves unable to place our trust in reason anymore, unable to hope for reason as a vehicle of emancipation. ![]() A certain stance or attitude becomes warranted, justified, or legitimate. What becomes available through emancipation, however, is not exactly true human flourishing or a return to our un-alienated “species-being,” but rather hope. What frames the outermost layer is the Marxist desire for and insistence on the need for emancipation. The thought here is presented as a beautiful Chinese box. The title of the lecture was “Reason against itself: Some Remarks on Enlightenment.” It ends with the following words: “The hope of reason lies in the emancipation from our own fear of despair.” It was spoken by the Frankfurt School critical theorist Max Horkheimer at the annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association in 1946. It captures the sentiment of suspension remarkably well and precisely. In reflecting on this, I thought of one of my favorite quotes from a philosopher. Every day, you hear people publicly pronounce that they are optimistic in spite of it all, even sometimes adding “now more than ever!” Our former president is a prime instance of this, and in the final words of his final press conference, he tried to assure us by saying, “ In my core, I think we’re going to be okay.” Most public officials and figures have opted lately, at least publicly, for the magnanimous cloak of optimism. Either side can take the high ground, insist that it is the “courageous” or “sober” or warranted response. It can either “fall” into pessimism or “steel itself up” and insist on optimism in spite of itself. It’s a state of suspension open to overtures or assurances from either camp. The sense of foreboding I mention presents itself to me as a kind of waiting room. These arguments and debates then result in the formation of two great opposing positions-meta-worldviews, as it were-Optimism and Pessimism. States or attitudes you can present arguments in favor of or in opposition to. They are treated like states you ought to be in, attitudes you ought to have, or not. Philosophy has for the most part treated them more like quasi-“objective states”, by which I mean something like cognitive attitudes which have a kind of normative status. Philosophers usually don’t feel very comfortable talking about things that can be seen as largely subjective and potentially idiosyncratic like that. Philosophy hasn’t usually treated hope and despair as moods exactly. ![]() I don’t think there is a philosophy of foreboding exactly, but in pursuit of the foundations for one, I’d like, instead, to offer a few remarks about two other moods-which have more bona fide philosophical credentials-namely hope and despair. It’s the mood I want to reflect on, and to reflect on it in the way I’ve been educated to, that is, “philosophically.” I’m not going to bother now to try to give the reasons, or the facts of recent history, why I or we might think it is legitimate to feel this way. Or worse: that it has already happened that the thunder was subdued if ominous, but the next lightning strike will not be, that it will disrupt everything about our way of life and about the possibilities for the future. A feeling that something is about to go really wrong, wrong in a way it hasn’t before for most of us, or in a way we thought no longer possible. A certain apprehensiveness, unease, disquiet, dread. The word I would offer to describe this mood would be: foreboding. What prompts me to write is a certain mood I have been in, and which I believe many others have been sharing. It can also have implications for the catalytic converter.Oil viscosity varies with temperature so much so that an oil’s viscosity should always be qualified with the temperature at which the viscosity is measured. This will also alter how the variable valve timing works. If the wrong oil is in the crankcase, it will change the three to five minutes it takes to bring the combustion chamber up to temperature. Zero-weight oils are designed to reduce emissions during warm up. Some cars specify 0W-20, 0W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 for their vehicles. Most vehicle manufacturers today specify 5W-20 or 5W-30 for newer vehicles for year-round driving. This requires more viscosity improver additive to achieve the same high-temperature rating as a 10W-30, 10W-40 or straight 30- or 40-weight oil. Also, an oil with a lower winter rating like 0W-20 or 5W-20 will contain a higher percentage of thinner base stock oil (which is typically a synthetic oil). They say it breaks down too quickly and does not stay in grade as long as 10W-30 or 5W-30. Because of this, it may be harder for these oils to remain in grade as the miles accumulate (which is why GM does NOT recommend using 10W-40 motor oil). Motor oils that have a wider range viscosity rating such a 5W-30, 5W-40 and 0W-40 are blended with more base stocks and additives. The first number with the “W” refers to the oil’s cold-temperature viscosity rating, while the second number refers to the oil’s high-temperature viscosity rating. Multi-viscosity grade oils have a wide viscosity range, which is indicated by a two-number rating. Likewise, a thicker high temperature oil such as SAE 30 or 40 would probably become so stiff at sub-zero temperatures that the engine might not crank fast enough to start. Multi-viscosity oils flow well at low temperature for easier starting, yet retain enough thickness and film strength at high temperature to provide adequate film strength and lubrication.Ī thin oil such as a straight SAE 10W oil designed for cold-weather use would probably not provide adequate lubrication for hot-weather, high-speed driving. Most modern motor oils are formulated from various grades of oil so that they will have the best characteristics of both thick and thin viscosity lubricants. Higher viscosity motor oils that are thicker and better suited for high-temperature operation may include multi-grade oils or single-weight oils such as SAE 30, 40 or 50. There are also 15W- and 20W-grade multi-weight motor oils. Low viscosity motor oils that pour easily at low temperatures typically have a 0W, 5W or 10W rating. The oil weight is its viscosity index at 100 degrees C (the boiling point of water). The rating is determined in a lab using a cold crank simulator and mini-rotary viscometer test. The numeric value of the first number (for example, the “5” in 5W-20) is a measure of the pour point of the oil expressed in degrees Celsius when the oil is cold. With multi-viscosity oils, a “W” after the number stands for “winter” grade oil. Viscosity ratings for commonly used motor oils typically range from 0 to 50. The higher the viscosity rating, the thicker the oil. The lower the viscosity rating or weight, the thinner the oil. The viscosity of the oil is measured and given a number, which some people also refer to as the “weight” (thickness) of the oil. The viscosity rating of a motor oil is determined in a laboratory by a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure. Thin is good for easier cold-weather starting and reducing friction, while thick is better for maintaining film strength and oil pressure at high temperatures and loads. ![]() Thinner oils have a water-like consistency and pour more easily at low temperatures than heavier, thicker oils that have a more honey-like consistency. Oil viscosity refers to how easily oil pours at a specified temperature. So, getting close to the recommended grade is impossible. But, modern engines have tighter tolerances and more sensitive emission systems. The oil supplier could sell you a 55-gallon drum and a shop could use it on vehicles that required either a 5W-30 or 10W-40. In the old days, a 10W-30 would work in a wide variety of vehicles. ![]() Medical/health – doctor, dentist, prescriptions, vitamins.Clothing – adult/kid clothing, work clothing.Transportation – auto loan, fuel, car insurance, DMV fees, parking fees.Charitable giving – offering, charities.Food – groceries, fast food, coffee shops.Utilities – electricity, gas, internet, phone, cable.Housing – mortgage/rent, utilities, insurance, home security system, HOA dues. The examples for each main category aren’t all inclusive! And it’s safe to eat-if you are concerned, please see the section below on its safety. It does not taste like seaweed-it has no flavor at all. It works in tandem with the tapioca (I tried each cheese without and it did not harden as well without the kappa, nor did it melt as well without the tapioca). Kappa Carrageenan is the magical seaweed derived substance that makes the cheese harden and then melt later. You can also use soaked cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, even white beans. I do not recommend silken tofu, but if you try it and it works for you, please let me know! Like I mentioned above, any variety of tofu should work, but if your tofu is softer, you may need less liquid. BOOM, non-dairy milk! You can also do it with coconut shreds! What Substitutions Can I Make? Tofu TIP: If you’re out of non-dairy milk but you have any nut or seed butter, blend a tablespoon of that with 8 to 16 oz water. Anything you’ve heard about carrageenan is based on a study done on poligeenan, a degraded form of carrageenan used in barium contrast solutions for diagnostic tests like X-rays and CT scans. Though it has the name carrageenan in it, kappa carrageenan is a seaweed derived food agent that is entirely safe to eat. We are looking for a thick consistency.įor the cheese to change state from hard to melted, we will need two things: tapioca starch / flour (this makes it stretch) and kappa carrageenan, which is a seaweed-based substance that makes it harden but also melt. This simply means that even though a costume may fit based on waist or hip measurements, it doesn't mean the inseam length, sleeve length or overall length will fit every body style with the same waist measurements.
